On Thursday we woke up bright and early to travel to Rome. Finally the sun came out! We decided to start our weekend early because there was a transportation strike on Friday. I have decided to do a bulleted list because I think it's easier to read, and I don't know about you, but I am always more likely to read a list than a bunch of long paragraphs.
- First we had a guided tour of the Non-Catholic or Protestant Cemetery. It is such a beautiful place. John Keats and Percy Shelley are buried there.
- Next we had a break for lunch. A few girls and I went and got pizza and ate it at the Trevi Fountain... it's even more beautiful in the sun.
- Tour of the Keats-Shelley memorial house where Keats died.
- Walk to top of Piazza del Poppolo from Piazza di Spagna. Visit inside a few beautiful churches, including the Church of Santa Maria del Poppolo.
- Next we went to a mall and shopped around and got gelatto. I think this time I got half hazelnut half chocolate. mmmm.
- Dinner with a group of girls (bresaolo and arugula bruschetta and a salad.)
- Irish pub, Scholars, with the entire group. Aerosmith coverband. ha.
- Ancient Rome Scavenger Hunt assignment (all day)
- Coliseum! But it was closed inside. Still amazing. Really special to me because my favorite book is centers around an ancient roman slave who fought in the coliseum. (thought of you, mom)
- Roman Forum. wow. check the pics.
- Lunch around Il Vittoriano
- Visit Tiber River
- Dinner by the Trevi Fountain. (yes, we come here a lot. good cheap pizza and a beautiful view. and yes it is even more beautiful at night.)
- Spanish Steps Pub Crawl. (didn't know what this was before i came to europe. the whole group went. quite an experience. worth the experience but never again for me... i did get to speak french to some new friends though!)
- Back to the Coliseum for an inside view! WOW. we just sat and stared for so long.
- Campo di Fiori for the market and lunch. I bought some dried strawberries. Another frittata/mozarella/zuchinne panino for lunch. Still really really love this place!
- Capitoline Museum. So beautiful and neat. check the pics.
- We found this really great gelatto/caffe/pizza bar by the Trevi Fountain that we keep coming back to. It's cheap and delicious. Good service. Good atmosphere. I think i got 1/2 chocolate chip and 1/2 mint chocolate chip gelatto. mint chocolate chip is still my favorite.
- Shop around Rome.
- Dinner at a Mexican restaurant! Fun to have some chips. We told them it was Laurie's birthday thinking they would sing to her or something. Nope, they turned off all of the lights and called her to the center. Out of nowhere comes a swing from the ceiling that they have her swing on to try to blow out a candle on a cake. Haven't laughed that hard in a long time.
- Back to Scholars Pub with some girls. Met some Irish friends and walked around the city.
- Exhaustedly run to the metro to catch our train back home to Ariccia.
- Feels great to be "home" and to shower... yep, didn't do that from Wednesday night-Sunday afternoon. But you know how I am. :) I wasn't the only one so it was ok.
